Seeing someone have a seizure can be frightening — but your calm response can make a huge difference.
Here’s what to do:
-
Stay with the person
Clear the area around them to prevent injury. -
Turn them on their side
This helps keep their airway open and prevents choking. -
Place something soft under their head
A folded jacket or pillow works well. -
Do not put anything in their mouth
This is a common myth. It could cause more harm. -
Time the seizure
If it lasts longer than 5 minutes, call emergency services.
Once the seizure ends, stay with them until they are fully alert. Reassure them. Most people will feel confused or tired after.
If it’s their first seizure, or they are injured, always seek medical attention.
